Select Board approves cyclocross bike races at Butternut and a fall turkey shoot season.
GREAT BARRINGTON -- No Great Barrington High School games were reported in ArbiterLive listings for the week, but the Select Board's September 14 meeting brought two community sporting events into the record.
COMMUNITY -- The Select Board approved a temporary entertainment license for the Berkshire Velo Cyclocross Bicycle Races, to be held at 380 State Road, the site of Butternut, on Saturday, October 3, and Sunday, October 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. An organizer told the board the race has run for more than 30 years, previously held out of Pittsfield, was paused during the pandemic, and is being revived this year in partnership with Butternut and what a presenter identified as the Berkshire Biking Board. Racing will take place both on and outside the Butternut grounds. Organizers said they expect 150 to 200 attendees on each of the two days, that no alcohol will be served, and that they will bring in their own portable toilets. Because the event is held on the grounds at Butternut, board members noted a police presence would not be required.
The board also approved a temporary license for the Great Barrington Fish and Game Turkey Shoots, located at 338 Longtown Road, to run each Sunday from September 20 through November 22, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jessica Ikestead, secretary of the Fish and Game Club, told the board the shoots are an annual fall tradition in which participants can win turkeys, steaks, pork or chickens.
