Select Board Backs Truss Design, 4-1, For Bridge

Select Board · Meeting of July 6, 2026

Great Barrington Select Board backs truss-style redesign for State Road Bridge, 4-1. The board recommended MassDOT's "alternate two" concept, which pays homage to the span's current red trusses, after a resident-driven pushback against an earlier "turnpike"-style option; member Garfield cast the lone dissent, saying he had no clear preference. The board also gave attorneys three more weeks, until July 27, to resolve whether a special permit for the long-stalled 79 Bridge Street hotel project has lapsed, after the applicant's attorney, Kathleen McCormick, said she "actually agree[d] with the opinion of town council" but wanted a direct conversation with counsel first.

Town Manager Chris Rembold disclosed a personal-real-estate conflict of interest under Chapter 268A and said he would recuse himself from related town business. The board also approved a driveway permit for 172 Division Street with a sprinkler condition and a new common victualer license for Riverside Cafe.
