Select Board votes 5-0 to set June 29 special town meeting warrant
Select Board · Meeting of June 9, 2026
Great Barrington Select Board votes 5-0 to set a special town meeting warrant it cannot fully fund. Town Manager Liz Huntsworth told the board and Finance Committee the three warrant articles total $1,428,863, while the town holds only $1,390,923.95 in free cash, meaning voters cannot approve all three June 29. One article would set aside $1 million plus $200,000 from stabilization for a disputed procurement obligation; attorney Peter Most argued the underlying contracts are void as "ultra vires." Finance Committee member Michelle called the situation "a $1.2 million mess" caused by "town government," not taxpayers.
The stabilization fund, at $780,509.49, already sits below the state's recommended 5 percent floor. Recommendations on all three articles wait for a June 16 joint meeting on a newly released procurement audit.
