Select Board Votes to Notify Simon's Rock of Coming Tax Bill

Select Board · Meeting of June 1, 2026

Great Barrington Select Board votes to put Bard College at Simon's Rock on notice for fiscal 2027 taxes. The board, working from outdated assessor's cards valuing the roughly 17-parcel campus at about $63 million, directed the town manager and assessor to send a letter stating the property is "eligible for taxation at some point during fiscal 2027, with details to follow." Member Garfield called the plan "a letter without teeth," and officials acknowledged the town has only $200,000 reserved against a possible $685,000 refund liability if an appeal succeeds. The same meeting approved a restructured, three-partner ownership split (45-45-10) for the liquor license at The Well, with attorney Kathleen McCormick representing applicants Josh Irwin, Lisa Ake and new partner Emily Thompson.

The board also set June 29 for a Special Town Meeting at Monument Mountain Regional High School and confirmed Malcolm Fick as a Berkshire Regional Planning Commission alternate.
