DPW to install new crossing signals on South Main Street
The Town of Great Barrington says its DPW Highway Division will install new pedestrian crossing signals on South Main Street on Oct. 20, adding MassDOT-provided flashing beacons and nighttime lighting.
The Town of Great Barrington announced Oct. 19 that its Department of Public Works Highway Division will install new pedestrian crossing signals on South Main Street on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026.
The work is part of the town's ongoing effort to improve pedestrian safety. Crews will install Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons provided by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The upgraded signals include pedestrian-activated push buttons and flashing lights meant to increase visibility and alert approaching motorists when pedestrians are crossing.
The new signals will also include overhead spotlights that illuminate the crossing after dark, adding visibility for pedestrians and motorists during evening and nighttime hours.
DPW crews will be working at the South Main Street crossing on Oct. 20. The town asked motorists to use caution, reduce speeds and stay alert for workers and pedestrians, noting that temporary traffic adjustments may be necessary during installation.
The town said it will provide an update once the new crossing signals are operational. Town Manager Liz Hartsgrove said in the release that the improvements reflect the town's commitment to pedestrian safety, accessible infrastructure and creating safer connections throughout the community.
